Today is Wednesday. The only good thing about today is this: tomorrow officially marks the beginning of the 2008 NHL Conference Finals, the last barrier to the Stanley Cup Finals.
For those of you who have been living under a rock for the last month or so, here are the matchups:
From the Eastern Conference:
Philadelphia Flyers @ Pittsburgh Penguins
From the Western Conference:
Dallas Stars @ Detroit Red Wings
Congratulations to all teams, and good luck (unless you're the Penguins...).
Speculations on the series, comments, anything? This is the thread to post in.

I think both series rely on how goaltenders will play. If Philly wants to get by Pittsburgh, Biron will have to be great. Same with Turco. His career Stats vs Detroit are not great but in this series he'll have to if he wants to get by the Wings.
Penguins in 6.
Wings in 7.

I don't like the scheduling with the games.
When you let something hot sit, it cools off. Could that be the same with Biron?
Flyers in 7
Detroit in 6

Penguins/Stars in 6.
I'll be shocked if the stars of Philly can outplay the stars of Pittsburgh. Andre-Fleury has been playing well and I think the Pens have been playing much better than either Montreal or Washington had been.
In the West, I think Dallas has played terrific hockey, but you have to wonder how tired they'll be from their last two games.

Random stat: The Flyers this season vs. the Pens are 5-3. Regular season action. They are 3-0 in playoff series vs. the Pens (at least, that's what I heard). The Flyers, as I have said in the past 2 rounds, are also one of the streakiest teams in the NHL. One moment, they're winning a lot of games in a row, next they're on a 10 game losing streak. Additionally, if reality sets in, because this is Philadelphia... Let's not go there. If the Flyers stay on their hot streak, don't let the time off make them rusty, and Biron plays as well as he has been (except in Flyers losses, especially in G1, R2), the Flyers should be okay. EDIT: Just found this from TSN:

I say Wings in 4 games and Flyers in 6 games.
If the Flyers can contain Ovechkin, I think they can contain Crosby, despite not having Timonen. I also thing the Wings will make a mockery of the Stars.

Well, as I suspected, reality has set in, and because this is Philadelphia...
...we never get the better end of the deal.
WHY CAN'T WE EVER GET A BREAK!
Naturally, this has to happen to us.
Not that I want it to happen to anyone, but if it had to, couldn't it have happened to Sidney Crosby? Or another Pens player?
Here's what we have to do:
SCORE MORE GOALS.
We may not have the personell to do this, but if we want to win, we have to score more points than the Penguins. That's just part of any sport.
Our power play killer not being here is going to hurt us though.
So...
...I think it's time to break this out of the video vault...

Everyone gets breaks and everyone takes falls.
The Penguins are much more talented and are playing much better than either the Capitals or Canadiens were playing at the time.
History means nothing. None of these players were involved in that 2000 series give or take one or two and the stars certainly had nothing to do with it.
But can they contain Crosby, Malkin, and Hossa?
The Stars need a win tonight. A split would be big.

Everyone gets breaks and everyone takes falls. Look up the last time any team has gotten a playoff-turning break in Philadelphia. I doubt you'll find anything after 1986. Oh well, I was just venting my anger at the situation. Flyers lose 4-2, in their first game. I'm still a little optimistic, since we've won the last 2 series without winning the first game. This might go for a while, though.

The "goal" in the first round against the Caps was a huge break - whether you believe it or not.

The Wings held Dallas to 18 shots last night and will take a 2-0 series lead back to Texas in the series.
The Stars need to get more pucks on net. No team will beat Detroit if they don't shoot at every possible opportunity.
The Flyers and Penguins play Game 2 tonight in their series.
I'm predicting a Penguins win, 5-3.

I'm predicting a Penguins win, 5-3. You dont need to post, we already know who you are picking.

I predicted the game, not the series.
I think the Flyers will win one of the next two. If not Game 3, they'll win what becomes a pretty meaningless Game 4 for the Penguins.
What did you guys think of Crosby's no-goal? Should it have counted?

No.
The NHL officials that night wanted to call it a goal, couldn't call it a goal, and were using every bit of technology they had to try and figure out if it was a goal.
I may be talking about something else, though.
On a side note: We can't win if we keep losing defensemen.

that was an awful puck to Coburn's face. any update on him? and where exactly did the puck hit on his face?
and as far as the Crosby goal is concerned, i think that it should have been a goal. i understand that the call on the ice was no goal, and that they needed conclusive evidence in order to overturn the call, but that puck was clearly over the line, even with Biron's glove in the way. i could see if the puck was actually in Biron's glove when it went across the line that the evidence would be inconclusive, but that isn't what happened.
that was a bad call in my opinion.
