In recent weeks, it seems like everyone in the hockey world has been talking about Alex Ovechkin. Don Cherry thinks he's a stupid showboater who needs to give the celebrations a rest. Bob Miller thinks Cherry is out of line. Are you a traditionalist? Do you think Ovechkin needs to stick a fork in his celebrations? Or do you think that antics like this are good for the NHL?

Who cares how a player celebrates? Scoring 50 is a great feat even for Alexander the Great, I like the energy and passion that he brings to the game. It makes him unique, even at the All star game he was having a blast, his smile might break a few camera lenses but he's a great player to have in the NHL.

Anybody who scores as often as Ovechkin does deserves to celebrate however he wants as long as it doesn't postpone the game by more than a few seconds (which it likely would've been postponed anyway).
Cherry is exactly what his crazy suits resembles: a clown.
The only problem with showboating here is when players who have 3-5 goals on the season start doing it, or when players on teams getting blown out do it. Otherwise, it just brings more fun to the game.

Let me play devil's advocate, NYI.
Tie Domi used to ride his stick like a horse when he scored. Why? Because it didn't happen often.
When guys like Ovechkin score, the celebration shouldn't be crazy. He's going to be doing it 40-50-60 times in a season.
I don't mind the jumping into the glass, and I don't mind the crazy fist pumps. What I do not like is the crap he pulled in the video. (Check the bottom of the post.) That kind of stuff is for Chad Johnson and Terrell Owens.
Speaking of Cherry, I forgot to watch HNIC tonight. I'll try to post the Youtube video of his reaction tomorrow.

If it's the video with the "hot stick," I've already seen it.
Tie Domi riding the stick after he scored because it happened so few times is just laughable in my opinion. Should he be happy he scored? Sure. Should he show off? Not at all. Not when you're scoring less than ten times a year.
Ovechkin doesn't do a crazy celebration after every goal. Like you said, I don't think the fist pumps, jumping into glass counts as crazy celebrations. How many crazy celebrations has he had this year? I can't even think of three off the top of my head. 40-50-60 times a year could get redundant, which is likely why he doesn't do it.
It was also a milestone goal that he decided to celebrate this way, his 50th of the season. In today's NHL that's quite some accomplishment

Oh, then we had our signals crossed. When Cherry referred to Ovechkin's celebrations as "crazy," he was talking about the jumping into the glass stuff. Basically, Cherry thinks that he should act like Sakic or Yzerman when he scores. Very humble, acting like he's going to do it again. I don't know. Milestone or not. It better not open a can of worms. There have been great celebrations in the past (Theo Fleury on his knees, Wayne Gretzky's fist pump while on one knee, Milan Hejduk "swimming" across the red line) but this just felt, I don't know, gimicky. Makes me look forward to the day he wins a Cup, though

The way I look at it, he just looks like he's having the time of his life out there. Having fun on every shift and I love that. His celebrations (to me, anyway) never come off as putting down the other team or being obnoxious.

Fair enough. If it were Crosby pulling this, Cherry probably wouldn't have anything to say.

I think for the most part Ovechkin's celebrations were fine...
...until that last one. The hot stick thing was not only the stupidest celebration ever, but I agree with Don Cherry in the sence that it did embarrass himself and the league. I for one liked the way the players were so respectful to the other teams. However, if somebody on the other team did that when they scored a goal, whether it be their first goal, 50th goal, or 5,000 goal, I'd cross check them so hard they wouldn't see the light of day. That was completely out of line in my opinion.
I don't mean to draw too much negative attention to Ovechkin, because this is really the only time he's done something like this that really annoyed me. However, if it happens again, I would be mad.
