The Colorado Avalanche might know by Thursday if captain Joe Sakic intends to return to the team for the 2008-09 NHL season.
According to the Denver Post, Sakic has scheduled a news conference Thursday before his charity golf tournament in Colorado. While there is no guarantee that Sakic will discuss his intentions, time is running out, as Avalanche veterans are scheduled to report to training camp for physicals on September 19.

A little past, but Sakic is obviously back now.
One year, probably his last. The question is, can he lead the Avs to the Cup one last time?
The easy answer is no. The Avs are being picked to miss the playoffs by basically every expert out there and they haven't been an elite team in years.
Is anyone willing to argue yes?

it's nice to see him coming back for another year, but if he had decided to hang up the skates, he would certainly have an oustanding career to look back on and be proud of. but, hall of famer or not, i don't think his presence will be enough to take the Avs to another cup. i'm an Avs fan, so it would be nice to see them return to the team they were 13 years ago when they moved from Quebec to Colorado.
