Another attempt by the Penguins to reach terms with a key impending unrestricted free agent was rebuffed Thursday. Defenseman Brooks Orpik declined a contract offer from the team. However, he has not committed to testing the free-agent market, agent Lewis Gross said.
"We did receive an offer from the Penguins, which we turned down," Gross said. "We're still talking, and we'll see where it goes."
Exact terms and financial details of the Penguins' offer to Orpik are not known. The offer is thought to have been a multi-year deal at about $3 million annually. Orpik earned slightly below $1.1 million last season.

Malone rejected an offer, followed by Hossa, Gary Roberts said he wants to play another season, but not with the Pens, and now Orpik declines an offer. The good thing about Orpik though is that, even though he rejected the Pens initial offer, he hasn't committed to testing Free Agency, and hopefully he won't. We've already lost three key players to Free Agency, we can't afford to lose another one in Orpik. He's one of the few defenseman that we have that makes the big hits, so hopefully Shero can strike a deal with him. Thoughts?

I consider Orpik a tremdnous asset and would love him on the Avalanche. That being said, the Pens should be scrambling to keep him, especially now that they know they won't be signing Roberts or Malone.
I don't think the Pens will go after anyone huge during free agency. Maybe some smaller named guys.

that's what Shero has been good at. just look at Sykora and how he played this season. i don't expect them to make a big splash either, but Shero better work his tail off to re-sign Orpik.
who do you see them signing?

I think they might just try for some depth guys - Yelle, Vrbata, Nagy, Ryder, or even a guy as big as Brian Roloson. (He could possibly move to winger, but that really isn't likely)
Maybe Commodore to sure up the defense?
