To me the Falcons image is that of a losing team and a weak organization BECAUSE of Michael Vick and a certainn coach who ran off to Arkansas.
It's a lot of money, but I think they needed to do it to prove that the Michael Vick era is over and that Ryan is their guy.

If anything, this actually hurts Atlanta's image.
Sure, they're over the Michael Vick era. Now they're going to be huge spenders who give tons of money to unproven players?
I don't like it.
You don't think they did that simply by drafting him in the first round?

I think drafting him was obvioulsy a big step but we've seen some quarterbacks drafted in the last few years hold out (Leinart, Russell), and these hold outs have hurt their rookie seasons.
The Falcons probably have a minimum of a four-year rebuilding project on their hands, but assuming Ryan can play, the project is off to a good start.

And I think any rookie who holds out for more money is playing the game for the wrong reasons. I believe they could have signed Ryan for at least half the money and sent the same message to their fans.

Am I the only one who thinks Matt Ryan is worth it? And this isn't me being a homer, I'm not a big BC Eagle fan. I am a Matt Ryan fan though and I think he will have a lot of success in the NFL and namely Atlanta. If I'm a GM of a dome team, I look for the tools that Matt Ryan has. He is a very smart quarterback who played in an NFL style system in college. He could have started as a true freshman if there wasn't a senior who had starting experience in front of him. If he develops the tools he has, he will be successful.
It will probably be a case similar to Eli Manning's. Matty Ice is going to be thrown to the lions right away and we shouldn't expect big numbers immediately. Two or three years in, though, he's going to be very good.

How do we know if he's worth it? For every Ben Roethlisberger there's a Ryan Leaf.
It's not as much the Falcons paying him as much as the NFL allowing teams to pay rookies close to an unlimited amount.
The only QB's who are worth a lot of money are ones who have proven themselves to be capable starters. Not rookies.

It's a set up for disaster if you ask me.. I agree, but I also disagree. Giving a rookie QB that much is obviously CRAZY!! because you don't know how good he will be in the NFL. College, wow, college is like almost 25% of what the NFL has in store for you. But, if he's good, and we'll see pretty soon, then I guess hes gonna be rich aswell.
