I've always been sympathetic to the golf board...and it looks like we actually have a story to talk about now In case you missed it, golf analyst Kelly Tilghman made a racist comment about "lynching Tiger Woods in a back alley". This was dismissed by most as an accidental comment, but Tilghman was suspended nonetheless. Even Tiger dismissed it as no big deal. But now, Golfweek magazine releases this: In my opinion, this is worst than the original incident. An announcer made a mistake, apologized, and that was it. Why does a magazine have to draw more attention to something that wasn't even a big deal in the first place... To get more readers? To get golf in the public eye?

It's definitely eye catching. That said, I could see any other sports magazine doing this if it pertained to their sport and its biggest star so I don't see the need to bash Golfweek individually but more the magazine cover culture as a whole trying to get readers through any means possible, no matter how dirty.

THANK YOU! Finally someone on the message board universe realizes how offensive this is. Reminiscent of the Don Imus scandal? Seriously, why does everyone still take stabs at African Americans? Sure, the article was nice, the first to really attack race in sports. But the picture, no, that's not appropriate in the least bit. For those of you who don't know what a noose is, here's the description from Wikipedia: "A noose is a loop at the end of a rope tied with a knot used for trapping and hanging animals or people. the term also refers to entrapment. The noose is also linked with lawful and unlawful execution (hanging) of human beings and associated with the “terror of lynching” And right after the Jena Six case was settled, too. Pathetic that this kind of stuff still happens. I don't think the picture was appropriate at all. If they want an African American golfer, just get a picture of Tiger Woods or Vijay Singh! The sad part is neither Tiger Woods nor Singh has yet to comment on this. Should be interesting to see what happens. Here's the article in case your interested: www.golfweek.com/story/tilghman_news_011608

If I'm not mistaken, someone was fired because of this? I thought I saw that on ESPN, but I literally missed it by a second.
But you know what? No matter how offensive, it's a perfectly legitimate cover. In a newspaper? No. On a magazine? Yes.
If you are offended, you do not have to suscribe nor read the story. But just by looking at the cover, it is likely many people will read the story and perhaps learn something about the incident. That might spread awareness which will result in some good in the world.
Or maybe I'm just stretching it. But is the magazine right? It's defintely not wrong.

The cover isn't wrong, but it's certainly not right. Not from a moral standpoint, but by taking an incident that was over and done with and creating whole new problems with it. Yes, it does bring attention to the public eye, but the cover took away from what actually happened. If you turn on Sports Center, and you see the Noose story, chances are you wouldn't pay attention to the actual instigator of the problem, you're just focused on, "Hey, there's a noose on that cover of Golfweek, what's it doing there?" The average person probably doesn't even know what happened, which was an analyst saying that all the young golfers should lynch Tiger in a dark alley. Completely distasteful, but Tiger's cool about it. So why bring it up again? That's what's wrong about it.

"I'm going to pick it up and find out!"
I'm not saying it's right, but I'm saying that as far as magazines go, they're free to do whatever they want.
If this were a newspaper, there would defintely be something wrong with it.

"I'm going to pick it up and find out!" "I'm going to read the first two paragraphs and put it down when I finally see it because I'm the average sports fan and my local convenience store only has Golf Digest!"

That's fine. You're giving it attention. That's all they want.

Hahaha, that's a new one. But I agree, if it was popularity they wanted, they got it. I had never heard of ''Golfweek'' before this incident, and probably would never have if it hadn't happened. That said, I'm still not got going to buy a copy. Oh yeah, on a little side note, the editor was fired...you think this was related to the noose incident, or just a company decision? (just kidding)
