In the upcoming Australian Open, Maria Sharapova was given the #1 seed over defending champion Maresmeau. Is she deserving of this?

I'm not arguing. I got to see Sharapova play here in Queens during the U.S. Open, and she is slowly dominating the game. It's not like she hasn't been playing well enough to be number one.

Yes, very much so. On current form she's the best female player in the world, and I strongly fancy her to win the Aussie open. Obviously the women's seedings aren't as straight forward as the mens, where Federer dominates the game. Different players win different tournaments, so the ranking points are a lot closer. Mauresmo can meet Sharapova in the final - that would be the best final possible at the minute I think.
