There are infinite consequences to playing preseason, but there are also numerous advantages. Is the risk of losing starters worth playing younger players?
What should/will be done? Shorten the preason? Leave it the way it is? Be rid of it all together? (This doesn't just include football. Many sports have exhibition games before the season.)

Football preseason won't ever be rid of or however that makes sense. I don't think it'll be shortened unless ESPN does a relentless attack on the NFL (that's the only way sports news is made - and now it's TO at the top and bottom of every show.) Only having a few days of bashing the NFL because Clinton Portis said so (if Portis didn't have his tirade, none of that would've even happened on ESPN.) I think 2 games is enough, or, we could just take away all of them and add 2 onto the season and let the rosters be expanded by 5 or 10 or whatever is good. Baseball Spring Training actually has a shot to be taken away because of the WBC. That's needed because you see guys who don't do either of those and completely fold any skills for that season. It's also good because we don't have to go through "Kerry Wood and Mark Prior" injuried during the actual season. That way, if guys get injuired, their backup can have good time against other MLB players rather than AAA or whatever they would've been in. I remember when the Mets used to come down here, but they stopped because it didn't make them money, just the reason the NFL has it's preseason. Oh, in Madden I always simulate the preseason. (And turn injuries off.)

ok, the preseason is fine! The preseason is only meant for backups who are trying the get spots on the team. If teams are really so concerned that players are gonna get hurt, dont even play them at all! (like the Chargers with LT) It gives other players a chance to show what they got and how good they are. The 4th preseason game means crap, no starters on any team play. So basically, its only 3 games and at least 1 of those games the starters play only a couple of series.

Preseason is pointless. FF3, you may say it's only for backups, but in that case, your putting young bodies on the line and a torn ACL here or there and you've lost a lot of careers. Seasons have been lost thanks to the NFL mentality that you have to play all out.
The NFL is also a 16 week grind, one rest week, and then for 12 of the teams, another 5-6 weeks for the playoffs. That's a lot of time to put wear and tear in the body.

So you're saying players shouldn't go all out? (GEO)

No, I'm saying they shouldn't have too in meaningless games. Put an NFL player in every game, and they'll play all out. Put any athlete, besides baseball players, in any game, and they'll play all out. But when you're doing it in a game that has no impact on anything, it's a little silly.

Nice blind shot on baseball players Aw, it's true. Some of them don't even play all out in the regular season. And this only goes for some of the players.

That's true for every sport.

But not to the extreme that it is for baseball.

Not really. Why should they play all out when they know they can't beat out a ground ball? There's only one Manny Ramirez, and he's the only player that has the lazy attribute. They don't pace themselves, because the pace is already set for them.
You probably weren't watching, but did you watch Coco Crisp run into the wall last night? I'm 100% sure you remember when Jeter dove into the stands.
And please don't tell me you can't tell the difference between baseball being played the way it's played and the difference between NBA regular season and playoffs.

Is this debate about baseball players going all out or is it about the preseason? Get back on topic. You guys were doing well until the baseball comment went out there.

I have a good counter to BlackOps' point, but I'll save it for another time The point is, preseason serves no purpose, besides giving rookies some playing time. The same could be accomplised with scrimmages between a single team.

Probably that all baseball players get paid and pampered too much and that sometimes they need to get knocked like real men (AKA hockey players).
The only purpose of the preseason is ESPN being able to run continuous clips of TO talking about himself and wetting his pants when he does it.
